Level 3
Chemistry, A Level
Level 3
Chemistry, A Level
Discover how chemistry shapes the world around us. Develop practical laboratory skills, investigate the science behind materials and reactions, and build the knowledge needed for university and careers in medicine, engineering, research, and the chemical sciences.
Course Overview
A Level Chemistry at Loxton Campus provides an in-depth understanding of the principles that govern matter, its properties, and the chemical reactions that shape the world around us. You'll explore topics including atomic structure, bonding, energetics, organic chemistry, and analytical techniques while developing the practical and analytical skills required for higher education and scientific careers.
You'll study in modern laboratories equipped with industry-standard equipment, carrying out practical investigations that reinforce your theoretical learning. Supported by experienced teachers and Tutor Learning Mentors, you'll also benefit from our Career Excellence Hub, giving you access to guest lectures, enrichment activities, and valuable insight into careers across the scientific sector.
What will I study?
Core topics include:
- Atomic structure, elements, and periodicity
- Chemical bonding and molecular structure
- Energetics, thermodynamics, and kinetics
- Chemical equilibria and rates of reaction
- Acids, bases, and pH
- Redox reactions and electrochemistry
- Organic chemistry, including functional groups and reaction mechanisms
- Analytical techniques such as spectroscopy and chromatography
You'll also develop skills in:
- Laboratory techniques and experimental methods
- Data analysis and interpretation
- Problem-solving and logical reasoning
- Scientific report writing and communication
Exciting Opportunities
As part of our Career Excellence Hub, you'll benefit from:
- Visits to research facilities and industrial sites
- Guest lectures from professionals working in pharmaceuticals, materials science, and environmental chemistry
- Practical laboratory investigations using modern scientific equipment
- Enrichment activities designed to support progression into higher education and science careers
Where will I study?
You'll study at our purpose-built Sixth Form at Loxton Campus, featuring modern laboratories, specialist equipment, and high-quality learning resources designed to provide a university-style learning environment.
How do AS and A Levels work?
You will normally study three or four A Levels over two years. In Year 1, you'll work towards an AS qualification before progressing to the full A Level in Year 2.
This flexible structure allows many students to study four subjects initially before continuing with three. AS Levels also carry UCAS points.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes:
- Written examinations at the end of Year 2
- Practical assessments completed throughout the course to demonstrate laboratory competence
Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs at grades 9–4, including English
- Grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths and Combined Science, or in both GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Biology/Physics where studied separately
What can I do after this course?
