Course Overview
A Level Computer Science provides a strong foundation in the theory and practical application of computing. You'll study computer systems, programming, algorithms, databases, networks, and software development while developing the logical thinking and analytical skills valued by universities and employers.
Based at Loxton Campus, you'll learn in modern computer laboratories equipped with industry-standard hardware and software, giving you the opportunity to develop practical coding skills and complete programming projects. Supported by experienced teachers and Tutor Learning Mentors, you'll also benefit from our Career Excellence Hub, providing work experience, employer projects, industry networking, and enrichment opportunities throughout your studies.
What will I study?
You'll explore topics including:
- Computer systems and processor architecture
- Systems software and software development
- Programming techniques and computational thinking
- Algorithms and problem solving
- Databases and data management
- Networks and network security
- Compression, encryption, and hashing
You'll also have the opportunity to follow specialist pathways such as Cyber Security, Media, or Young Enterprise, while gaining additional digital certifications including Microsoft Office and LinkedIn Learning courses.
Please note that A Level Mathematics must be studied alongside this course.

Where will I study?
You'll study at our purpose-built Sixth Form at Loxton Campus, featuring dedicated computer laboratories, industry-standard software, and modern technology designed to provide a university-style learning environment.
How do AS and A Levels work?
You will normally study three or four A Levels over two years. In Year 1, you'll work towards an AS qualification before progressing to the full A Level in Year 2.
This flexible structure allows many students to study four subjects initially before continuing with three. AS Levels also carry UCAS points.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes:
- Written examinations at the end of Year 2
- Coursework and practical programming projects that assess your technical and problem-solving skills
Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs at grades 9–4, including English
- Grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths
A Level Mathematics must be studied alongside this course.
