Course Overview
English Language & Literature A Level combines the study of language and literature, giving you the opportunity to explore how writers create meaning and how language influences the way we communicate. You'll analyse novels, plays, poetry, and non-fiction while developing your own critical and creative writing skills through discussion, debate, and independent research.
You'll study at Loxton Campus in a university-style learning environment with access to specialist library resources, collaborative study spaces, and experienced teachers who will support your academic development. You'll automatically join our Career Excellence Hub, giving you access to university preparation, employer encounters, guest speakers, and enrichment opportunities. During Year 1, you'll complete an AS qualification before progressing to the full A Level in Year 2, with opportunities to follow pathways including creative writing, media, and debating. Throughout the course, you'll build highly transferable skills in communication, analysis, and critical thinking that open doors to a wide variety of careers.
What will I study?

Where will I study?
You'll study at Loxton Campus, with access to specialist learning resources, modern study spaces, and a university-style learning environment.
How do AS and A Levels work?
You will normally study three or four A Levels over two years. In Year 1, you'll work towards an AS qualification before progressing to the full A Level in Year 2.
This flexible structure allows many students to study four subjects in Year 1 before continuing with three A Levels. AS Levels also carry UCAS points.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes:
• Examinations (80%) analysing unseen texts, comparing literary works, and evaluating language use
• Coursework (20%) including independent research and original writing
Entry requirements
• Five GCSEs at grades 9–4, including maths, and grade 5 in English
• Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills
• An interest in language, literature, and communication
