Course Overview
English Literature A Level gives you the opportunity to explore some of the world's most influential literary works while developing your ability to analyse, interpret, and evaluate texts. You'll study novels, plays, poetry, and prose from different periods, discovering how writers use language, structure, and context to shape meaning and engage readers.
You'll study at Loxton Campus in a university-style learning environment with access to specialist library resources, collaborative study spaces, and experienced teachers who will support your academic development. You'll automatically join our Career Excellence Hub, giving you access to university preparation, guest speakers, literary events, and enrichment opportunities. During Year 1, you'll complete an AS qualification before progressing to the full A Level in Year 2. Throughout the course, you'll develop highly transferable skills in critical thinking, communication, research, and independent study that are valued across a wide range of careers.
What will I study?
Core topics include:
• Analysis of poetry, prose, and drama
• Literary genres and movements
• Historical, cultural, and contextual influences on literature
• Comparative study of texts across different time periods

Where will I study?
You'll study at Loxton Campus, with access to specialist learning resources, modern study spaces, and a university-style learning environment.
How do AS and A Levels work?
You will normally study three or four A Levels over two years. In Year 1, you'll work towards an AS qualification before progressing to the full A Level in Year 2.
This flexible structure allows many students to study four subjects in Year 1 before continuing with three A Levels. AS Levels also carry UCAS points.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes:
• Examinations (80%) covering textual analysis, literary comparison, and unseen texts
• Coursework (20%) including an independent research essay or creative project based on set texts
Entry requirements
• Five GCSEs at grades 9–4, including maths, and grade 5 in English
• Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills
• An enthusiasm for studying literature in depth
