Discover the science of life through practical investigation and critical thinking. Explore everything from cells and genetics to ecosystems and evolution while developing the skills needed for university and careers in medicine, healthcare, research, and the life sciences.
Course Overview
A Level Biology at Loxton Campus provides a comprehensive study of the living world, combining scientific theory with practical investigation. You'll explore topics including cells, genetics, physiology, evolution, ecology, and microbiology while developing the analytical and investigative skills required for higher education and scientific careers.
You'll study in modern laboratories using industry-standard equipment and take part in practical investigations, fieldwork, and guest lectures that bring biology to life. Supported by experienced teachers and Tutor Learning Mentors, you'll also benefit from our Career Excellence Hub, helping you develop the academic knowledge, practical experience, and progression skills needed for your future.
What will I study?
Core topics include:
- Biological molecules and cell structures
- Enzymes, metabolism, and energy transfer
- Cell division, genetics, and inheritance
- Evolution, natural selection, and biodiversity
- Plant and animal physiology, including homeostasis
- Ecology, ecosystems, and environmental biology
- Microbiology and biotechnology
You'll also develop skills in:
- Laboratory techniques and experimental design
- Data analysis and statistical interpretation
- Critical evaluation of scientific evidence
- Scientific report writing and communication
Exciting Opportunities
As part of our Career Excellence Hub, you'll benefit from:
- Field trips to local habitats and research facilities * Guest lectures from healthcare, research, and conservation professionals, including universities and employers such as Hanham Secure Health
- Opportunities to compete in the Biology Olympiad Worldwide competition
- A specialist Biomedical pathway in Year 1 for students interested in medical and healthcare careers
Where will I study?
You'll study at our purpose-built Sixth Form at Loxton Campus, featuring modern laboratories, specialist equipment, and high-quality learning resources designed to provide a university-style learning environment.
How do AS and A Levels work?
You will normally study three or four A Levels over two years. In Year 1, you'll work towards an AS qualification before progressing to the full A Level in Year 2.
This flexible structure allows many students to study four subjects initially before continuing with three. AS Levels also carry UCAS points.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes:
- Written examinations at the end of Year 2
- Practical assessments completed throughout the course to demonstrate laboratory competence
Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs at grades 9–4, including English
- Grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths and Combined Science, or in both GCSE Biology and GCSE Chemistry
